Nanna held the thin paper strip between her fingers, head bent low in quiet thought. “There’s something about writing down a wish that feels a little like confession, isn’t there?” she said, smiling faintly. She glanced up toward her companion, brows raised as though asking if they’d felt the same hesitation. “But I think… if you don’t speak your dreams, no one can help make them come true.”

She rolled the paper into the lantern’s rim and leaned in to guide it to the water, her breath catching slightly as it took to the surface and began its slow, flickering drift. “May yours reach the stars,” she whispered, barely audible, before stepping back and watching the others join the glowing tide.

"I am told Fiana is a coastal village." Miranda depends on the words of others, because she has never seen it herself. Her life is not marked by constant movement like Nanna's, but by the same four walls. "Does the shore here remind you of it?"

She wouldn't know. She'd never seen it.

"It is my first time seeing the ocean aside from riding on boats. The sand from the beach gets everywhere and it is hard to walk on. The water is colder than I would have thought, as well. I had thought beaches would be more... I am not sure. I do not know what I expected. It is very different from a river."

Miranda had probably wished to see the ocean at one point. She had a lot of wishes when she was younger. Wishes that she had no one to share with save for a single knight. It did not matter whether she shared them aloud or kept them to herself, because they never came true. Even if they did come true, they were such minor things that they hardly counted as wishes at all.

What other little girl wished to be able to walk freely around their own home?

"Writing your wish down does make it feel more tangible, I suppose," she says, not meeting Nanna's eye.

The water feels cold on her fingers in a way she wishes it didn't, even after she shakes the water off and joins her fellow princess where she waits. If she only watches the shore, she won't have to see her lantern sink.

Miranda unhooks a star from her wrist and offers it to Nanna.

"We are meant to trade these, are we not? Take it."

my dad said he made something similar to this when he was a kid. being a teen in the early 60's he liked to tinker with stuff and reportedly made a device that would turn off the family TV. and by family tv i mean it was my grandfathers tv because he paid for it. so if grampy wanted to watch tv it didn't matter if someone else was watching something at the time, they had to give it up for grampy. Dad said he'd camp out at the top of the stairs just in view of the tv and press the button to shut off the tv and grampy would get up from the couch and walk over to the tv and turn it back on and go back to sit. then intermittently my dad would turn off the tv several more times and grampy would have to get up and turn the tv back on again until grampy would get frustrated with technology and leave. then the tv was available for my dad to watch
